The Politics and Positioning of

Caribbean Arts and Culture


The Division of the Humanities at Paine College is requesting proposals for the Third Caribbean Arts and Culture Symposium to be held March 23 - 25, 2012. The symposium will be held on the Augusta, GA campus of historic Paine College, founded in 1882.

The theme of the Third Caribbean Arts and Culture Symposium is The Politics and Positioning of Caribbean Arts and Cultures. Organizers of the symposium are interested in receiving proposals from faculty, independent scholars, graduate students, undergraduate students, artists, and designers working in the literary, visual, performing, design, and communication arts as well as social, cultural, and historical studies. ALL TOPICS WILL BE CONSIDERED. POSSIBLE TOPICS MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Polical Leaders and Artistic Influence
  • Literary Criticism and Popular Culture
  • The Global, Postmodern, and Postcolonial
  • Caribbean Design: Architecture and Fashion
  • Caribbean Influences on Global Art and Design
  • Technology and Transformation
  • Rastafarianism as a Global Movement
  • Caribbean Reflections in a Post - 9/11 World
  • Caribbean Performance and Imitation
  • Tracing Traditions: Art, History, and Politics
  • Carnival and Junkanoo 

 Proposals are sought in three categories:

  • 1) Professors, independent scholars, artists, and designers

  • 2) Graduate students

  • 3) Undergraduate students

Please indicate your status in the proposal. Proposals should be no more than one-page and provide the title and thesis of the paper, panel, or roundtable discussion. For proposed panel sessions, the title of the panel is requested as well as the title and thesis of each presenter's paper. For proposed roundtable discussions, provide the title of the discussion group, names of participants, and tentative topics for discussion. All proposals must include name, mailing address, email address, and telephone number(s). Papers must have a reading time of no more than twenty (20) minutes. Roundtable discussions are limited to forty-five (45) minutes.
